Latin Footprints Lead to Bronze on CTCWeb

Needham, MA - March 30, 2005 – Walking like a Roman is easy if you just follow the Latin “footprints,” according to Dr. Marny Lemmel. Lemmel, an instructor of Latin at Ohio Dominican University, Wittenberg University, and Tree of Life Christian High School is this week’s AbleMedia Bronze Chalice winner for her Vestigia published on the Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb). “Lemmel’s translation of this well-liked poem into Latin provides teachers with an opportunity to bring modern sentiments into the classroom through an ancient language,” said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief.

Lemmel’s Vestigia is an expertly-done Latin translation of the popular unsigned poem entitled “Footprints.” Teachers looking for simple, short verses for their students translate from Latin to English should walk no further than Lemmel’s award-winning posting on CTCWeb. Vestigia has practical application in the Latin classroom as a translation exercise that focuses on verb tenses and noun cases, making it a highly effective Latin teaching tool. Both the English and Latin versions of the poem are posted on CTCWeb.

“This an anonymous piece has been circulating for years and it seems to give comfort to many people who are in times of difficulty,” said Lemmel. “I recently sent a copy in English to a friend whose daughter is dying of cancer. When I sent it, it dawned on me that it would be a piece that might be welcomed translated into Latin.” Vestigia can provide both comfort and classroom content for Classicists and non-Classicists alike.
