Chapter 30, Drill b: Understanding passive voice.

In each English sentence, indicate whether the verb (and thus the sentence) is active or passive.

Example:
Theomnestus summoned Quintus.
Answer: Active: since the verb "summoned" takes a direct object, "Quintus", the verb is active.

1. Quintus was summoned by Theomnestus.

2. We perceived danger.

3. Danger was perceived by you.

4. Quintus delighted his father.

5. Quintus' father was delighted.

6. Marcus lifted his wine cup.

7. Quintus saw the Parthenon.

8. The wine cup was lifted into the air.

9. The Parthenon was seen by all.

10. Quintus will send a letter.

11. Quintus had never seen such glorious sights before.

12. A letter was sent from home.

13. Such glorious sights have never before been seen.

14. Observe the customs of our ancestors!

15. The bride has crossed the threshold.

16. Are the customs of our ancestors being observed?

17. The threshold has been crossed many times.

18. Horatia was carried over the threshold by Decimus.

19. Decimus carried Horatia over the threshold.

20. I have been working on this for a long time.
