Day 1: Wednesday
Introduction to the "spacy"
art of NASA artist Robert McCall
- View slides of his paintings.
- Discuss his use of classical
motifs and their significance.
Day 2: Thursday
An information scavenger hunt
using the gazetteer of the International Astronomical Union.
- Note the classical names of
missions, shuttles, satellites, planets, moons, sites on the
moon, etc.
- Discuss why classical names
were chosen for these things and whether they are appropriate
(considering the original meanings and use of the names in classical
times).
Day 3: Friday
Assignment of space program
project:
- Assuming unlimited funding,
each student will design a space mission by choosing,
a) a destination,
- b) a purpose,
- c) a length for the mission,
- d) appropriate classical names/titles
for all space crafts, findings, etc.

- Each student will use the Internet,
classical dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., to research the
classical titles chosen and their appropriateness for the mission.
- Each student will design a
patch and Latin motto for their mission incorporating appropriate
classical symbols and artwork, etc.
- The projects will be collected
in one week, graded, and displayed for the class to discuss and
enjoy.
