The circus was the stadium in which chariot races were held. These elongated structures look much like modern race tracks, with two straight stretches and sharp turns at the ends. The circus was the center of ancient Roman entertainment much as the amphitheater was, as citizens would gather there to watch the races. The racers were organized into teams, with each team having a different color. The riders would prominently display their team's colors, so that the crowd could cheer for (and bet on) the team they favored. The races were also a popular place to meet girls, according to Ovid. |
