TECHNIQUE #2: IN THE BEGINNING, GLOSS COMPLETELY THE DIFFICULT GRAMMATICAL CONSTRUCTIONS. DO NOT TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN THESE GLOSSES UNLESS THE STUDENTS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT THEM.

The following example is more difficult than the poems presented under Technique #1. However, with the appropriate glosses and with help from their teachers, students should be able to translate the poem accurately. Again, teachers can adapt this basic strategy to almost any Latin text (in verse or in prose). I suggest using Martial or Catullus, however, because students gain a greater sense of satisfaction from completing an entire poem rather than a few lines of a much larger work.

Martial 5.9

Languebam: sed tu comitatus protinus ad me
venisti centum, Symmache, discipulis.
centum me tetigere manus Aquilone gelatae:
non habui febrem, Symmache, nunc habeo.

Possible glosses (add as much help as the students need):

comitatuscentumdiscipulis = accompanied by 100 students

protinus = immediately

venisti = you came

tetigere = tetigerunt = (they) touched

gelatus, -a, um = chilled

non habui = I did not have
