DoE Curriculum Unit: The Gods and the Heroes of the Odyssey

Standards

  • 1.1 students read, understand and interpret Latin
  • 2.2 students demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of Roman culture as revealed in the products of the Romans
  • 3.1 students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through their study of classical languages
  • 3.2. students explain their knowledge through the reading of Latin and the study of ancient culture.
  • 4.1 students recognize and use elements of their own language to increase knowledge of their own language
  • 5.1 students use their knowledge of Latin in a multi- lingual world
  • 10.4 Interdisciplinary Connections: Students will apply their knowledge of the arts to the study of English Language Arts, Foreign Languages, Health, History and Social Science, Technology and Engineering.

Students of Classical Languages will obtain information and knowledge related to other disciplines from sources in the target language.

Goals, Aims and Objectives

  • to have students understand the role of the hero and myth in the Odyssey by identifying them through lists
  • to have students identify the characters, gods and heroes of the Odyssey in classical art thru pottery vases and classical art
  • to have students create tiles, mosaics collages and powerpoints representing the gods and heroes of the Odyssey.
  • to have students tell a myth or story that occurs in the Odyssey
  • to have students translate Latin stories that involve the Odyssey into English
  • to have students develop a DVD/VHS or book cover depicting scenes form the Odyssey
  • to have students write a critical essay on the movie of the Odyssey
  • to have students understand art buy making a tile of a mythological representation
  • to have students make a collage of scenes from the Odyssey
  • to have students understand literary word derivations from the vocabulary of the heroes, god and goddesses of the Odyssey by defining them
  • to have students understand and manipulate the Greek alphabet
  • to have students do creative poetry writing or songs about the heroes and gods of the Odyssey
  • to have students do dramatic presentations dances and skits that depict the heroes and gods of the Odyssey
