Catullus’ Complaint (Odi et Amo)

Here in a Romanized version of John Lennon’s Working Class Hero, the thoughts urge him along different paths which they think could lead him out of the depths of despair to a fulfilling, productive life. Among the paths referred to are (1) further education, (2) the army, (3) tax collecting, and (4) politics, before an unrecognizable thought tempts the poet with what appears to be an easy solution of drugs and escape.
