Grade 6 - ROOTS
Classics as a Cross-Curricular Core in the Middle School
Austin Preparatory School

Recognition of a Universal Narrative: How people and times that appear to be so different are much like ourselves and our own time, and how we learn to examine each.

This integrated curriculum would attempt to:

  1. Introduce a wide variety of experiences in literature, language, and ancient world cultures and religions.
  2. Develop the academic skills needed for reading comprehension, analysis of language, a Writing Across the Curriculum program, world historical perspective, and intellectual curiosity and imagination.
  3. Prepare the student to assimilate and personalize these experiences and skills in order to begin assembling, articulating, and composing ideas and language for the 7th Grade curriculum.

Cross-Curricular Project Coordination

The following projects areas are being developed:

1. Mapping: Students are taught scale and grid skills in Mathematics.

A. Social Studies mapping - World map projects are developed in Geography semester, in preparation for student mapping of the voyages of Odysseus in English and the wanderings of the Hebrews in Religious Education. Map of the Mediterranean is used for teaching mythology in Latin class.

B. Scientific mapping - Topographical maps of the Austin campus are developed for Science classes, with each student researching and mapping a small grid section, and then assembling a large display map of the campus. Scientific terminology is taught in Latin class. Students return to Mathematics for interpretation of data, an introduction to statistics and probability.

2. Mythology

A. Mythology plays - Students learn mythology in Latin class, then write and rehearse skits depicting the myths in English class. Plays are costumed in Latin class and performed for the entire Grade 6 during high school semester exam week.

B. National Mythology Examination - Students prepare selections from the Odyssey in English class and the mythology text in Latin class.

3. Writing Across the Curriculum: Odyssey

Stories from the Odyssey of Homer are used in English class as student investigate in journals and writing assignments their personal "odysseys" and those of contemporary film and fiction, including the Incredible Journey, by Sheila Burnford, The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, and stories from the Scott Foresman Literature and Integrated Studies reader. Science and Social Studies contribute class time to this project, and written work is polished for publication and performance. Latin classes cover live, audio and video performance of the Odyssey.

Possible Addition

Archaeological Excavation - Students participate in an "arranged dig" to learn some basics of archaeology. Geology and Stratification are taught in Science class. Interpretation is taught in Social Studies. Pompeii and Herculaneum are studies in Latin class. Project may be related to the Jason Project and underwater archaeology.

Possible Addition from CTCWeb: Unearthing the Lost City of ABurbe-Suburbe.
